Biofuel - Europe Pauses for Thought

EU Environment Commissioner, Stavros Dimas, has admitted that the EU did not foresee the scale of the problems raised by Europe's drive towards the increased use of biofuels.

As previously reported on this blog, the EU's rush to achieve a 10% use of biofuels has inadvertently contributed to increased costs for food products (a biofuel staple) as well as causing significant environmental degradation in parts of Asia and Africa.

"We have seen that the environmental problems caused by biofuels and also the social problems are bigger than we thought they were. So we have to move very carefully," Dimas told the BBC.
